SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers anticipate to be with out free safety Jimmie Ward longer than they initially hoped.
Ward suffered what coach Kyle Shanahan referred to as a “pretty bad” hamstring injury on Aug. 14, and although the Niners acknowledged he would miss a while, it could price Ward the primary month of the season.
Niners normal supervisor John Lynch stated on the pregame present for Thursday’s preseason finale towards the Houston Texans that Ward is probably going to land on injured reserve to begin the season, which might price him the primary 4 video games.
“He allows us to do what we do,” Lynch stated on Amazon’s broadcast. “He’s a safety who plays like a safety but also covers like a corner. He’s often times our best cover man, so it’s a big loss. But we got to find a way to step up.”
The Niners signed veteran safety Tashaun Gipson on Monday to improve the depth and competitors with Ward out. Dontae Johnson, who’s getting into his ninth NFL season, moved from cornerback to safety in camp and is getting an extended have a look at free safety after coming back from a rib injury just lately.
Per league guidelines, if the 49ers need Ward to land on injured reserve with the choice to return, they can’t make that transfer till after the cutdown to the preliminary 53-man roster.
That means the Niners may have to carry Ward on the 53-man roster till after 4 p.m. ET Wednesday earlier than they’ll place him on injured reserve. If they did it earlier than then he would have to miss the whole season.
